Privacy Policy

Who we are
Safe or Scam? ("we," "us") is a service that helps families identify scams. A family member forwards a suspicious email, text message screenshot, voicemail, or photo of a letter to their family's Safe or Scam address, and we reply with a plain-English verdict. What we collect
- Account information. When you sign up, we keep your name, your email address, and the email addresses of the family members who will use the service. Payment is handled entirely by Stripe; we never see or store your card number.
- Forwarded messages. When a family member forwards something suspicious, we receive that message and its attachments (screenshots, photos, voicemail audio). This is the heart of the service, and it is the data we treat most carefully.
- Verdict history. We keep a record of each verdict (scam, safe, or unsure) and its short summary so we can send the weekly family digest.
- Website analytics. Our website uses Plausible, a privacy-focused analytics tool that uses no cookies and does not track you across the internet. We see anonymous page counts, nothing about you personally.
How we use it
One purpose: deciding whether the thing you forwarded is a scam, and telling your family about it. Specifically:
- Forwarded content is analyzed by AI services (described below) to produce the verdict.
- Verdict summaries appear in the weekly digest email sent to the account owner.
- Your account email is used for receipts, the digest, and service notices. We do not send marketing email to family members who forward messages.
The AI services we use
Two outside AI providers process forwarded content on our behalf: Anthropic (the Claude model analyzes the message and writes the verdict) and OpenAI (transcribes voicemail audio to text). Both process this data through their business APIs, which by their terms do not use your data to train their models. We never train any AI model on your family's data either.
How long we keep things
- The content of forwarded messages (the message text, screenshots, photos, and audio) is deleted within 30 days of the verdict.
- Verdict records (the verdict itself, its one-line summary, and the date) are kept so your digest history works.
- Account information is kept while your subscription is active and deleted within 90 days of cancellation, except billing records we are legally required to keep.
- Want something gone sooner? Email hello@safeorscam.app and we will delete it promptly.
Who we share it with
Nobody, except the service providers needed to run the product: Stripe (payments), Postmark (email delivery), Supabase (database), Netlify (hosting), Anthropic and OpenAI (the AI analysis above), and Plausible (anonymous analytics). Each receives only what it needs to do its job. We do not sell personal information, we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers, and we never will. If the law ever compels us to disclose something, we will disclose the minimum required.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit, stored with a managed database provider, and accessible only through service credentials, not by the public. No system is perfectly secure, which is one more reason we delete forwarded content quickly instead of stockpiling it.
Your rights
Email hello@safeorscam.app at any time to ask what we have about you or your family, ask us to delete it, or ask us to correct it. We answer these requests for everyone, not just residents of states whose laws require it.
Children
Safe or Scam? is built for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we make a meaningful change, we will email the account owner before it takes effect and update the date at the top of this page.
